2024 Key Steps To Apply For An Internship At The United Nations

An internship at the UN could be the ideal start if you are considering a career in the Organization. It will give you exposure to high-profile conferences, political decision making or work on the ground, as well as the opportunity to contribute to the projects and mandates of the United Nations.

Here are the key steps to apply for an internship at the United Nations:

  1. Explore Internship Opportunities
The first step is to thoroughly review the UN internship opportunities available on the UN Careers website (careers.un.org). The site lists all current internship openings across the various UN agencies, programs, and offices. Carefully review the requirements, responsibilities, and qualifications for each internship that aligns with your interests and background.
  2. Prepare Your Application Materials
For a UN internship, you will typically need to submit the following:
  • Cover letter: This should highlight your motivation for the internship, relevant skills and experience, and how the role aligns with your academic and career goals.
  • Curriculum vitae (CV): Ensure your CV is concise, well-organized, and emphasizes your academic background, language skills, and any prior internship/work experience.
  • Proof of enrollment: You will need to provide documentation showing you are currently enrolled in an academic program.
  • Letters of recommendation (optional): Strong reference letters from professors or previous employers can bolster your application.

  1. Submit Your Application
Once you have assembled your materials, you can apply for UN internships through the online application system. Be sure to meet all stated deadlines and follow any specific instructions provided for the internship of interest.
  2. Prepare for Interviews
If selected as a candidate, you will likely be invited to participate in one or more interviews, either in person or virtually. Review common interview questions, research the UN and the specific internship, and practice articulating your qualifications and interest in the role.
  3. Await the Outcome
The UN receives a high volume of internship applications, so the selection process can take several weeks or months. Stay patient and persistent, and be sure to follow up on the status of your application as appropriate.

Who can apply?

Anyone who is

  • enrolled in the final year of an undergraduate university programme (e.g., a bachelors programme),
  • enrolled in a graduate programme (e.g., a master’s or Ph.D. programme),

When can I apply?

Internships are available on a part-time or full-time basis at any time throughout the year and vary in length according to the availability and academic requirements of the intern, as well as the needs of the UN. The minimum duration is two months full time and the maximum is six months.
