The internship resides in the Director’s Office within UNICEF’s Division of Global Communication and Advocacy (GCA).
Through multiple platforms and in multiple languages, UNICEF’s Director of Global Communication and Advocacy, in his capacity as UNICEF Official Spokesperson, draws attention to the many facets of UNICEF’s work, encouraging public support, participation and action, as well as ensuring greater transparency and accountability.
The Director’s social media accounts deliver compelling UNICEF content to international audiences of parents, young people and UNICEF supporters, building engaged communities in multiple languages across social media and web platforms, while providing expert digital services to the organization. For the successful intern, this is a unique opportunity to learn about UNICEF, work with teams across 190 offices, and deliver impact.

The Social Media Intern enhances UNICEF’s knowledge leadership and social media impact by managing the Director’s social platforms through strategy development, content creation, audience engagement, and performance analytics.
- Manage the Director’s global English social media strategy and channels. This includes:
- Creating a social media strategy and schedule for the next three months
- Reviewing country and regional office channels, ED’s and SG’s channels, UN reports, and UNICEF’s Digital Asset Management platform, WeShare, for content suitable for global amplification.
- Producing video and photo content
- Writing copy for posts
- Optimizing and scheduling content across social media platforms
- Other editorial tasks as needed
Deliverable: Daily social media posting and engagement
- Conduct analytics and community management
- Analyze views and impressions and propose optimization methods
- Manage community engagement and follower growth
- Monitor and moderate comments as needed
Deliverable: Daily community management
- Develop and execute a social media project (details to be discussed upon start of assignment)
- Lead a social media activation that will engage UNICEF’s supporters
- Execute it with guidance from the supervisor and social media colleagues
- Present on it with analytics and recommendations to the Director’s Office by the end of the internship

Deliverable: Project presentation
- Research, produce, edit and publish content
- Identify trends on social media platforms and pitch video, graphic and photo posts
- Produce, edit, incorporate feedback, and publish the content with accompanying copy.
- Research and identify digital influencers to support UNICEF’s campaigns
Deliverable: 5-7 pieces of content each week for the Director’s global social media channels (English).
To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…
- Be enrolled in an undergraduate university degree or higher in international affairs, communications, digital marketing, or journalism, or have graduated within the past 2 years
- Be excellent in using social media platforms (TikTok, IG, X, LinkedIn)
- Have excellent writing skills including experience in writing posts and video scripts
- Have excellent short video production skills
- Have experience with video and photo editing tools
- Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) is an asset.
