How can you make a difference?
Italy continues to be a major entry point for refugees and migrants, facing significant arrivals via the Central Mediterranean and Western Balkan routes. In 2023, the country witnessed a surge in arrivals, including a substantial increase in unaccompanied and separated children (UASC).
Despite a robust legal framework, the Italian child protection system faces challenges in providing adequate care and support to all arriving children due to increased arrivals, system fragmentation, and disparities in service quality.

In 2024, while arrival numbers have slightly decreased compared to the peak in 2023, significant challenges persist, including the arrival of particularly vulnerable groups such as single-parent families, pregnant girls, and very young children.
To address these challenges, UNICEF aims to strengthen the capacity of the Italian protection and reception system for all refugee and migrant children, particularly UASC, families, and survivors of gender-based violence.
To achieve this, UNICEF has developed the Refugee and Migrant Response Platform (RMRP) to harmonize data collection and analysis, monitor the quality of the reception system, and track the impact of UNICEF interventions.
