Zimbabwe has been left mourning following a tragic helicopter crash in the Marondera rural area that reportedly claimed the lives of six people, including prominent businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke.
The helicopter crashed at approximately 5pm on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, in rural Marondera, east of Harare. Zimbabwean authorities confirmed that six people were aboard the aircraft and that there were no survivors. Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said emergency authorities attended the crash site and that the victims would need to be formally identified.
Government spokesperson Nick Mangwana also confirmed the fatal aircraft accident and said authorities would release the identities of the victims after the necessary identification procedures. Reuters reported that the aircraft was carrying a high-profile businessman, other passengers and two pilots.
However, Zimbabwean media reports subsequently identified the prominent businessman as Wicknell Chivayo, with reports also naming his wife, Lucy Muteke, among those who died. Because the official release of the victims’ names was still pending at the time of reporting, the identities should be regarded as subject to formal confirmation by authorities.
A Businessman Known for Extraordinary Gifts
Wicknell Chivayo became one of Zimbabwe’s most recognisable business personalities, particularly because of his highly publicised lifestyle and philanthropic activities.
Over recent years, Chivayo gained widespread attention for giving away expensive vehicles, cash and other gifts to musicians, church leaders, sports personalities and members of various communities. His generosity became a major feature of his public image, with some of his vehicle gifts involving luxury brands such as Mercedes-Benz, Range Rover and Toyota.
His donations also extended to churches and religious communities. In one widely reported example, he spent more than US$400,000 providing Toyota Aqua vehicles to 50 members of his congregation.
Chivayo was also known for donating vehicles to prominent religious figures. In 2025, he reportedly presented a Toyota Land Cruiser 300 ZX to the late apostolic church leader Paul Mwazha as a birthday gift. The vehicle was later involved in a fatal road accident near Featherstone in September 2026.
A Life That Attracted National Attention
Beyond his philanthropy, Chivayo was known for his involvement in business, particularly through Intratrek Zimbabwe, and for his highly visible lifestyle. His public activities regularly generated significant discussion across Zimbabwe and on social media.
His reported death comes at a time when he remained one of the country’s most talked-about business personalities.
The Marondera helicopter tragedy has therefore brought shock to many Zimbabweans who followed his public life, business activities and extensive charitable gestures.
As authorities continue with the formal identification process and investigations into the cause of the crash, attention will now turn to the families of the six victims and the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
