Responsibilities
Background Climate security in Somalia is a critical area of focus for UNEP, given the interconnected challenges of climate change and conflict within the country. Climate-related risks can exacerbate insecurity and create vulnerabilities for communities. UNEP’s work emphasizes integrated approaches to address these challenges by working with government to develop policies and coordinating stakeholders that contribute to peace, stability, and environmental sustainability. The Communications, Reporting, and Research/Analysis Intern will play a pivotal role in supporting UNEP’s Climate Security efforts through research, reporting, and strategic communication.
Duties and Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Climate Security Advisor, the intern will work on:
1. Research and Reporting: To Develop talking points for events and contribute to the preparation of research and reports. o Assist in drafting written reports and concept notes, including documents and data on climate security in Somalia. o Conduct desk-based research integrating data related to climate security.
2. Communications Support: o Draft content for reports, publications, and events related to climate security. o Providing support to research for policy development support. o Support data visualization and prepare infographics and factsheets.
3. Event and Meeting Participation: o Provide administrative and substantive support to meetings and events, including taking minutes. o Attend JOSP meetings and contribute to reporting processes. o Participate in environmental security focused events in Nairobi.
4. General Support: o Assist with logistics, scheduling, and coordination of team engagements, meetings, etc. o Engage in other tasks as needed to support the team’s objectives.
Qualifications
• Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a graduate program in environmental studies, international development, social sciences, politics, or related fields.
Languages
• Proficiency in English (spoken and written). Knowledge of another UN language is an asset. Competencies
• Strong research and analytical skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
• Proficiency in data management and visualization tools.
• Organizational skills with attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multicultural environment.
