About the Office of the Victims’ Rights Advocate (OVRA)

The OVRA was established as part of the UN Secretary-General’s four-pronged strategy set out in the 2017 report to the General Assembly on strengthening measures to prevent and address sexual exploitation and abuse. As a Communication Intern, you will support this crucial mandate by helping ensure that public information, outreach activities, and communication materials reflect the UN’s dedication to transparency, accountability, and victim-centered approaches.

Work Location & Duration

The internship is in-person in New York, and only full-time participation will be considered.
The expected duration is 3 to 6 months, with a desired start date of February 2026.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

Under the supervision of a Human Rights Officer, the Communication Intern will contribute to a variety of tasks essential to the OVRA’s work. Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting research and analysis on issues relevant to victims’ rights, human rights, and the prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse.
  • Supporting internal and external communication strategies, ensuring that messaging is clear, informative, and aligned with UN standards.
  • Producing multimedia and digital content, such as infographics, social media posts, visual materials, and other digital assets.
  • Designing and drafting presentations, updating communication materials, and contributing to the development of advocacy tools.
  • Assisting in outreach and public information efforts, including monitoring social media engagement and digital visibility.
  • Attending meetings, conferences, and official UN events, and preparing accurate notes and summaries.
  • Performing other communications-related duties as required.

Qualifications & Skills Required

To qualify for this internship, applicants must meet at least one of the following academic conditions:

  1. Be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school programme; or
  2. Be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a bachelor’s degree programme.

In addition:

  • Applicants must be computer literate and comfortable with standard software tools.
  • Preference is given to candidates studying communication, journalism, web design, graphic design, marketing, or related fields, especially those with experience in digital tools and visualization.
  • Candidates must demonstrate a strong interest in the work of the United Nations.
  • A commitment to multiculturalism, diversity, and tolerance is essential.
  • No prior work experience is required, making this internship ideal for students and recent graduates looking to build a global career.

Language Requirements

  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of another official UN language—such as French, Arabic, Spanish, or Chinese—is an advantage.

Visa Requirements

Candidates who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents must obtain a G4 visa to undertake the internship. Applicants are responsible for securing the appropriate visa and ensuring they have valid employment authorization (CPT/OPT/AT) when applicable.
