What Is the UNIL Master’s Scholarship?

The UNIL Master’s Scholarship 2027 is an excellence scholarship offered by the University of Lausanne to international students with outstanding academic records.

The scholarship is specifically aimed at students who obtained their previous university qualification outside Switzerland and whose degree is recognized as equivalent to a Swiss bachelor’s degree.

Recipients can use the monthly scholarship support toward their living expenses while studying in Lausanne. Because Switzerland has a relatively high cost of living, prospective applicants should carefully plan their finances before accepting the scholarship.

The scholarship also provides an exemption from standard course registration fees, although recipients still have to pay the CHF 80 semester fee.

How Much Does the Scholarship Pay?

The UNIL Master’s Scholarship 2027 provides CHF 1,600 per month during the minimum statutory period of the selected master’s programme.

This financial support can help international students manage some of their expenses while studying in Switzerland. However, applicants should not describe the award as a fully funded scholarship.

According to the university, the CHF 1,600 monthly amount does not cover the full cost of living in Switzerland. Students should therefore consider accommodation, food, transportation, health-related costs and other personal expenses when preparing their financial plan.

The scholarship recipients are exempt from standard course registration fees, but CHF 80 in semester fees remains payable.

Who Can Apply?

Applicants for the UNIL Master’s Scholarship 2027 must meet several conditions.

Candidates must hold a foreign university degree that is recognized as equivalent to a Swiss university bachelor’s degree before beginning their master’s programme at UNIL.

Applicants must also have achieved outstanding academic results during their previous studies.

Another important requirement concerns language proficiency. Candidates must have at least C1 level under the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The required language depends on the selected master’s programme: French is required for programmes taught in French, while English is required for programmes taught in English.

Applicants must not already be enrolled at the University of Lausanne and must pay the required CHF 200 administrative fee.

Eligible Master’s Programmes

The UNIL Master’s Scholarship 2027 is available for many master’s programmes offered by the University of Lausanne, but several programmes are excluded.

Applicants cannot apply for the scholarship for master’s programmes in the School of Medicine, Sciences and Practices of Education, Physical Education and Sport Didactics, Health Sciences, Sustainable Management & Technology, or Human Taphonomy.

Most Master of Law programmes are also excluded, although applications are open for the specialisms of International and Comparative Law, Legal Theory, and International Tax Law and Policy.

All MAS programmes, which are third-cycle and further-education programmes, are excluded.

Additional requirements may apply to applicants seeking master’s degrees in Finance, Psychology, Arts or Nursing.

Application Requirements

Applicants should prepare their application as a single PDF containing the required documents.

Two recommendation letters are also required. These letters must be sent directly by the recommenders using professional email addresses to the university.

Some applicants may additionally need to submit certified true copies of their academic documents by post. This applies to candidates whose diplomas were obtained in a state that has not ratified the Lisbon Convention.

Incomplete applications will not be considered.

How to Apply

The application for the 2027/2028 academic year is completed online. The application for the master’s scholarship also serves as the application for the selected master’s degree, meaning applicants do not need to submit a separate application to the Admissions Office.

Candidates should first review the programme requirements and prepare their documents. They then need to complete the online registration, upload their single PDF application file and arrange for their recommendation letters to be submitted.

Where certified documents are required, applicants should send them only after completing their online registration.

Important Deadline

The deadline for the UNIL Master’s Scholarship 2027 is 1 November 2026.

The university states that the online registration deadline is November 1, while recommendation letters must also reach the university by that date. Where certified academic copies are required, the postmark deadline is also November 1.

Applicants should therefore begin preparing their documents well before the deadline.

Selection Timeline

Applications are processed between November and December, followed by faculty consideration between January and February. The scholarship Selection Board makes its decisions in March.

Applicants are expected to receive notification of the Selection Board’s decision in early April.

The university also notes that decisions cannot be appealed.

Is It Fully Funded?

The UNIL Master’s Scholarship 2027 is not fully funded. The CHF 1,600 monthly scholarship provides substantial financial support, but the university explicitly states that it does not cover the full cost of living in Switzerland.

Applicants should therefore calculate their expected expenses and identify additional financial resources where necessary.

Final Thoughts

The UNIL Master’s Scholarship 2027 provides high-achieving international students with an opportunity to study for a master’s degree at the University of Lausanne while receiving CHF 1,600 per month.

The award is competitive, with around ten scholarships offered each year, and applicants must demonstrate outstanding academic performance and meet the required language and admission conditions.
