The Role of the Natural Science Sector
UNESCO’s Natural Sciences Sector operates within key global frameworks such as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Paris Agreement on Climate Action, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, and the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, as well as the African Union’s Agenda 2063. The sector adopts a systemic and integrated approach to addressing global challenges by strengthening skills, knowledge, and innovation.
Key areas of focus include sustainable management of natural resources, biodiversity conservation, disaster risk resilience, water security, science and technology innovation, STEM education, and support for Small Island Developing States (SIDS). Through these efforts, UNESCO aims to promote green economies and inclusive, science-based development worldwide.
Internship Tasks and Responsibilities
During the internship, selected candidates will support the work of various divisions within the Natural Science Sector. Typical responsibilities may include participating in the preparation and review of project documents, drafting technical notes, and assisting with briefing materials and progress reports. Interns may also contribute to research activities, data collection, and background analysis for partnerships and fundraising initiatives.
Additionally, interns will support communication and visibility efforts, including updating web content and designing communication materials. Administrative and logistical support for events, workshops, and conferences is also part of the role, alongside assistance with budgeting, financial documentation, and project evaluation.
Learning and Professional Development
This internship offers valuable learning opportunities. Interns will gain insight into UNESCO’s work and international policy-making in the field of natural sciences. They will develop skills in project design, planning, and implementation, while enhancing critical-thinking abilities through active participation in brainstorming and policy discussions.
Interns will also strengthen soft skills such as teamwork, communication, stakeholder engagement, and problem-solving, all aligned with the UNESCO Competency Framework.
Eligibility and Qualifications
Applicants must be at least 20 years old and currently enrolled in a graduate programme (Master’s, PhD, or equivalent), or have graduated within the last 12 months. A strong command of English or French is required, with knowledge of the other language considered an asset. Excellent computer skills, strong communication abilities, and the capacity to work in an international team are essential.
Studies in water science, hydrology, ecological science, earth sciences, basic sciences, engineering, or related natural science fields are considered desirable.
Important Notes
UNESCO internships are not remunerated, though interns are entitled to 2.5 days of leave per month. Due to high competition, meeting eligibility criteria does not guarantee placement.
