2027 Martingale Scholarships: Fully Funded Apply Online

The 2027 Martingale Scholarships are now open, offering talented postgraduate students the opportunity to pursue fully funded Masters and PhD programmes in mathematical sciences and artificial intelligence at leading UK research universities.

The Martingale Foundation is designed to support talented students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds who face financial barriers to postgraduate study. Successful scholars receive financial support alongside tailored university application assistance, professional development, leadership training and access to an international research community.

For students with strong academic potential and an ambition to build careers in research, mathematics, AI or related areas, the programme offers an opportunity to study at some of the UK’s most prestigious universities without the usual financial burden of postgraduate education.

2027 Martingale Scholarship Overview

The Martingale Foundation’s 2027 scholarship programme is focused on postgraduate degrees in Mathematical Sciences and Artificial Intelligence.

What Does the Martingale Scholarship Cover?

One of the strongest features of the programme is that it goes beyond paying university tuition.

Successful scholars receive a fully funded scholarship covering tuition fees and research expenses. The programme also includes a tax-free stipend calculated according to the Living Wage Foundation, helping scholars meet living costs while undertaking demanding postgraduate study.

Martingale also provides tailored support during university applications. Qualified Candidates receive assistance with applications to partner universities through workshops, one-to-one guidance and application support.

This is particularly valuable for students applying to highly competitive institutions, where understanding admissions requirements and presenting research interests effectively can make a significant difference.

Professional Development and Leadership Training

The scholarship is also designed to prepare students for long-term careers rather than simply fund their degrees.

Masters scholars participate in the Masters Development Programme, which runs alongside their postgraduate studies. It includes professional development, communication and public-speaking training, academic networking and engagement with leading figures from academia and industry.

PhD scholars can participate in the PhD Leadership Programme, a multi-year programme focused on developing the skills, confidence and experience needed to become leaders in academia, industry, teaching or other professional fields.

Scholars also become part of a wider community of researchers and professionals, creating opportunities for collaboration, mentorship and networking.

Who Can Apply?

The 2027 Martingale Scholarships are intended for applicants who demonstrate academic potential, motivation for postgraduate research and evidence of financial barriers.

According to the current eligibility requirements, applicants must generally:

  • Have achieved, or be on track to achieve, a First or Upper-Second Class degree or equivalent in a relevant subject.
  • Be eligible to begin a Masters or PhD at a UK university from September 2027.
  • Qualify for Home Fee status at the relevant partner university.
  • Have attended school in the UK or Ireland for at least three years between ages 11 and 18, or at least seven years between ages 4 and 18.
  • Have completed GCSEs or equivalent at a state-funded school, or received a scholarship/bursary covering at least 90% of fees at a fee-paying school or college.
  • Have faced or currently face financial barriers, including a household income of £45,000 or under.

Martingale assesses socioeconomic background using multiple indicators, including household income, parental occupation, school background, care experience, Free School Meals eligibility and refugee status.

Applicants with refugee status who qualify for Home Fee status may be exempt from the usual UK or Ireland school-history requirement.

Leading UK Universities Available

The scholarship provides access to selected postgraduate programmes at several major UK research universities.

Partner institutions listed for the wider Martingale programme include the University of Bristol, University of Cambridge, University of Edinburgh, University of Glasgow, Imperial College London, University of Manchester, University of Oxford, University College London, University of Warwick and University of York, among others.

The 2027 course portfolio includes programmes covering areas such as pure and applied mathematics, mathematical physics, computational mathematics, machine learning, artificial intelligence, robotics, computer science and data-intensive research.

At Cambridge, for example, eligible AI-related programmes include the MPhil in Human-Inspired Artificial Intelligence, MPhil in Advanced Computer Science, MPhil in Machine Learning and Machine Intelligence, MPhil in Data Intensive Science, MPhil in Scientific Computing, as well as relevant PhD programmes.

Other universities offer opportunities ranging from mathematical sciences and applied mathematics to machine learning, autonomous robotics, AI for sustainable development and computer science research.

Because the eligible course list can differ by university, applicants should carefully review the official 2027 course listings before selecting programmes.

Application Process

The Martingale application process has three major stages.

  1. Apply to Martingale

Applicants first complete the online Martingale application. The application assesses academic background, motivation, socioeconomic circumstances and interest in postgraduate research.

Applicants are required to provide information such as an academic transcript, evidence of financial need and two referees.

  1. Apply to Partner Universities

Shortlisted applicants who become Qualified Candidates receive support to apply directly to eligible courses at partner universities.

Martingale provides application workshops, one-to-one guidance and other support during this stage. Candidates must still complete each university’s own application and meet its admissions requirements and deadlines.

  1. Funding Allocation

For Masters applicants, successful university offers are considered alongside candidates’ university and course preferences when funded places are allocated.

For PhD applicants, universities make offers from the pool of qualified candidates, subject to available places and individual university requirements.

Importantly, becoming a Qualified Candidate does not automatically guarantee a scholarship because the number of qualified candidates can exceed the number of available funded places.

Key Application Dates

The 2027 application timeline is already underway.

  • 12 August 2026: Applications opened
  • 18 October 2026: Final application deadline
  • November 2026: Interviews
  • December 2026: Applicants notified of outcomes
  • December 2026: PhD Showcase

  • January–February 2027: Applications to partner universities
  • March 2027: Confirmation of university offers

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, although final shortlisting decisions are made after the deadline. Martingale encourages candidates to submit applications as soon as they are ready rather than waiting until the final day.

How to Strengthen Your Application

Applicants should begin by carefully checking every eligibility requirement. The scholarship is competitive, so simply meeting the minimum criteria may not be enough.

Clearly explain why you want to pursue postgraduate research, what areas of mathematics or AI interest you and how postgraduate study fits into your long-term ambitions.

Your academic record should demonstrate strong potential, while your personal statement should provide a convincing explanation of your motivation and circumstances. Applicants should also ensure that their financial background and supporting documentation accurately reflect their situation.

Research the eligible courses carefully and identify programmes that genuinely match your academic interests. For PhD applicants in particular, developing a clear understanding of potential research areas can help demonstrate genuine research motivation.

Final Thoughts

The 2027 Martingale Scholarships represent a significant opportunity for talented students who want to pursue postgraduate research but may face financial barriers.

With full tuition and research support, a tax-free stipend, university application assistance, leadership development and access to a strong research community, the programme offers considerably more than conventional scholarship funding.

The opportunity is particularly attractive for students interested in the future of mathematics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, computational science and advanced research.

Eligible applicants should review the official requirements, explore the available courses and begin preparing their applications well before the 18 October 2026 deadline.
